Ethiopian Airlines has opened a new cargo terminal, with a processing capacity of 600,000 tons annually, in the presence of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and Tewolde GebreMariam, group chief executive officer (GCEO) of Ethiopian Airlines. Costing 150 million dollars, the cargo terminal lies on 150,000sqm of land.

The French Agency for Development (AFD) and KfW IPEX-Bank financed the project with a loan of 80 million dollars and 36 million dollars, respectively, with the remaining covered by Ethiopian Airlines.

The cargo terminal, inaugurated on June 29, 2017, has a fully automated dry cargo terminal warehouse and perishable cargo terminal with cool chain storage. The terminal for perishable products has an apron area accommodating five freighter aircraft, and different temperature sensitive products such as fresh agricultural products and pharmaceuticals.

Varnero Construction Plc constructed the terminal while Unitech worked on the civil engineering works including designing the terminal and installing the cargo handling system. The duo received 80 million and 36 million dollars, respectively.

Currently, Ethiopian Airlines, which flies to more than 95 international and 21 domestic destinations, is contemplating embarking on the second phase of a similar cargo terminal project that has the same capacity.
